National Careers Week is upon us once again and this year we thought it would be interesting to take a look at estate planning as a career path and why it seems to be going from strength to strength.

It’s tough to choose a career path that’s right for you, especially when you’re younger. It’s a common occurrence: you’ve finished your studies and you’re wondering what to do with your life.

Few already have a career trajectory planned out in their head, though life certainly has a way of derailing us at every opportunity! For the majority of people, there will be no clear fixed notion of which job role will be right, which one will lead to success and be fulfilling.

No job is fulfilling all the time, unless you are extremely lucky, but estate planning has the advantages of being ever-changing (no two clients are alike), and you don’t need any formal legal qualifications to learn to do it. What’s more, business is booming!

As outlined in a recent IRN Legal report, people are becoming more aware of the choices they have when it comes to future asset planning and their wills, with now only 50% of people going to their solicitors, down from 55% just a few years before, and the trend looks set to continue.

Why this is happening is up for debate, although it could be to do with the general population being more educated on the subject and the unpredictable economy leading people to think seriously about protecting their wealth and planning for it to be passed on to the people that matter to them the most.

As an estate planner, you will be in a unique position to help people plan for the continuation of their estate after death, and the prudent management of their assets during life.

You are dealing with intensely personal aspects of your client’s lives and can make a real difference for them. Knowing the intricacies of the legal system will help in a role such as estate planning but it is by no means essential – it’s far more important to have what are called ‘soft skills.’

These are skills most people have without even knowing it. The ability to communicate with other people, to empathise with them, to solve problems or issues that should arise in a professional and timely manner; these are the most important skills for an estate planner.

As an estate planner you get to make a difference in your clients’ lives and make a decent living while you’re doing it.
